Devotions to St. Philomena this Sunday, May 12

On Sunday, May 12, we will once again have devotions in honor of St. Philomena after the 9:30 AM Tridentine Mass. This devotion marks the anniversary of the discovery of the relics of the saint in May of 1802. All are welcome to come and seek the powerful intercession of this great wonderworker.

Special note: We have already begun a Novena of Sundays to the Holy Spirit for our new pastor. This novena prayer will be recited before the St. Philomena devotions.

NOVENA PRAYERS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen

Let us praise our God in veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother and Protector.

O Almighty and merciful God! You have given the Church a wondrous help and defense in the most holy Virgin Mary and You have honored Her sacred image as the Black Madonna with remarkable veneration of the faithful. Grant in Your mercy that, under Her protection, we may struggle confidently throughout our lives and at the moment of death be victorious over our enemy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Black Madonna, our Mother and Queen of our nation! Trusting in Your maternal goodness and powerful intercession with Your Son, we place before You our humble prayers and petitions. To You we commend all our needs, in particular (Mention requests silently in your hearts), our families, and all children of our nation.

V: For Your presence and intercession at the Shrine of the Black Madonna and for the countless graces You have obtained for us in the past,

R: We thank you, O Black Madonna, our Mother.

V: For Your gracious reign over our parish, for Your powerful help throughout our history, especially in times of difficulty and suffering,

R: We thank you, O Black Madonna, our Mother.

V: For the maternal care with which You ever surround us, leading us to Your Beloved son, strengthening the faith in our hearts, drawing sinners to conversion, and comforting the sick, the sad, and the faint-hearted,

R: We thank you, O Black Madonna, our Mother.

V: For our negligence in the faith and for the religious indifference through which we have strayed so often from God, unmindful of his presence and love,

R: We ask You, Mother intercede for us.

V: For our conduct which has not always been in accord with our holy faith nor with the dignity of a child of God; for sins against life, for drunkenness, selfishness, carelessness, envy, social discord, and lax morals,

R: We ask You, Mother, intercede for us.

V: For being so preoccupied with ourselves that we did not see the needs of our brothers and sisters; the hungry, the homeless, the sick, and the lonely,

R: We ask You, Mother, intercede for us.

V: O Mother with the Divine Infant in Your arms, through this sacred image You remind us of the constant presence of Your Son and of Your own motherly solicitude as a source of strength and courage in our daily trials, difficulties, and labors,

R: We praise You and we love You

V: O Queen, whose image bears the scars of enemy attacks, You are to us a sign of hope, unity, and victory,

R: We praise You and we love You

V: O Virgin Helper, You aid us in overcoming all evil and weakness,

R: We praise You and we love You

V: When we are oppressed by doubts and temptations against faith,

R: Be our help and protection.

V: When we feel lonely, abandoned, and threatened,

R: Be our help and protection.

V: When we are in danger of yielding to our evil habits and sins,

R: Be our help and protection.

V: That You may strengthen us in faith and obtain for us the power to renew our lives in the spirit of God’s commandments and the Gospel of Christ,

R: We beseech You, O Black Madonna, our Mother.

V: That You may continue to reign in our lives on the personal, family, social, and national levels,

R: We beseech You, O Black Madonna, our Mother.

V: That You may obtain for us from Your Son the special grace that we implore in this novena,

R: We beseech You, O Black Madonna, our Mother.

Hail Mary (3 times)

Sub Tuum Praesidium It is to You, O holy Mother of God, that we go for refuge and protection. Look kindly on us as we cry to You in our need. Glorious and blessed Virgin, be with us always and rescue us from every kind of danger. Amen.

External Solemnity of St. Anne to be celebrated on Sunday, July 29, 2012

Artwork by: Jenna Gambino

As many of you know, Ste. Anne is the patroness of the Archdiocese of Detroit.  (FYI. “Ste” is the French abbreviation for a female saint. The French were the ones who brought St. Anne’s devotion to Detroit.) Her feast is observed in both forms of the Roman Rite on July 26.

In the rubrics of the Extraordinary Form, the feast of the principal patron of a diocese may be observed on the Sunday closest to the actual feast. We will be observing the feast of St. Anne as an external solemnity on July 29. The observances of this feast at St. Josaphat Church will be as follows:

9:30 AM: Tridentine Mass (Missa Cantata) celebrated by Fr. Marczewski with veneration of the first class relic of Ste. Anne.

Please let your family and friends know about our Sunday celebration of Ste. Anne.

Veneration of the Relic at last year’s feast

Corpus Christi High Mass and Outdoor Procession

We held our High Mass and outdoor procession to 4 outdoor altars on Thursday, June 7, which is traditionally the day Corpus Christi is observed in the calendar of the Extraordinary Form. This is also the case for the Ordinary Form calendar. In some places like in the Vatican, Thursday is observed as the Feast of Corpus Christi. In most places, such as the United States, Corpus Christi is observed on Sunday.

Divine Mercy Novena 2012 in progress…

This novena began on Good Friday.

For those of you who come to our church, you may obtain copies of the Divine Mercy novena in the vestibule of the church. You can also check this link: http://thedivinemercy.org/message/devotions/novena.php

For those of you who would prefer a more traditional version of Divine Mercy devotions, we provide the following link. http://www.revcastor.com/divine_mercy.pdf. This link gives you the novena, litany, chaplet and background information on the Divine Mercy devotion as given to St. Faustina as it was before Vatican II. The text comes from the period when the devotion was just starting to be promoted. This edition of the devotion can only to be used for private use. It is not allowed to use these prayers for public devotion in church because only the official versions of the chaplet and novena may be used in public.

Public Novena Devotions in honor of the Divine Mercy at St. Josaphat will take place on Monday at the 7PM High Mass for Easter Monday and also on Thursday at the 12 Noon English Mass.

Feast of the Assumption

The Blessing of Herbs and Fruits for the Assumption

Next Sunday, August 14, all are invited to bring fruits, herbs, and flowers before Mass to St. Josaphat and Assumption-Windsor for the Blessing for the Feast of the Assumption. This tradition is associated with Our Lady because she is seen in biblical imagery as a vine; flowers represent her virtue; and Our Lord is her fruit.

Masses for the Feast of the Assumption

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated at St. Josaphat Church with a High Mass on Monday, August 15 at 7:00 PM.

On Sunday, August 14 at 2:00 PM, Assumption Church in Windsor will offer a High Mass for the External Solemnity of the Assumption, the patronal feast of the parish. The rubrics of the Extraordinary Form permit the moving of a parish’s patronal feast to the nearest Sunday. Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament will follow the Mass.

More to come…

Feast of the Dedication of St. Mary Major (August 5)

In the time of Pope Liberius, there lived at Rome a certain nobleman named John and a noble lady his wife, who had no children to whom to leave their substance. Then they vowed that they would make the most holy Virgin Mother of God their heiress, and earnestly besought her in some way to make known to them upon what godly work she would that the money should be spent. The blessed Virgin Mary graciously listened to their prayers and heartfelt earnestness, and by a miracle assured them of her will.

On the 5th day of August, which is that time when the heat of summer waxeth greatest in Rome, a part of the Esquiline Hill was covered by night with snow. And on this same night the Mother of God appeared in a dream to John and his wife separately, and told them that on that spot, which in the morning they should see clad with snow, they should build a Church, to be dedicated in the name of the Virgin Mary, for that this was the way in which she chose that they should make her their heiress. John went and told it to Pope Liberius, who declared that he also had been visited by a like dream.

Therefore he came in a solemn procession of Priests and people to the snow-clad hill, and traced upon that spot the plan of a Church which was built with the money of John and his wife. It was afterwards rebuilt by Sixtus III. At the beginning it was called by divers names, sometimes the Liberian Basilica, sometimes the Church of St. Mary-at-the-Manger. Howbeit, since there are in Rome many Churches called after the Holy Virgin Mary, and this Church doth excel them all, both in honour, and because of the strange sign wherewith it was dedicated, it hath come to be called the Church of St. Mary Major. The memory of the dedication thereof is kept every year by a Feastday that taketh name from the wonderful fall of snow which on this day took place.

The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, tat any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, and sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee I come before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Our Lady of the Snows, Pray for Us!
